Tales of the Shire: A Lord of the Rings Game Reviewed

The latest Lord Of The RingsThe game is a charming village simulator developed by Wētā Workshop, but are they just as skilled at creating games as they are at special effects?

Upon hearing the name Wētā Workshop, the initial thought often revolves around the groundbreaking (for its era) visual effects in The Lord of the Rings films and their subsequent, less compelling spin-offs. What is not as widely recognized is that although Wētā mainly operates as a special effects company, they also engage in other ventures, such as producing board games. To date, these have comprised District 9: The Board Game and GKR: Heavy Hitters, but they have now chosen to venture into creating a video game.

The outcome is Tales Of The Shire: A Lord Of The Rings Game. It centers around hobbits, but this time instead of embarking on a journey to Mordor to throw a demonic ring into a volcano, you remain contently in the Shire, particularly in Bywater. At the start of the game, the county assessor deems it not even deserving of being called a village, so it's up to you and your fellow Bywater residents to alter that perception.

You achieve this by building friendships and establishing the organizations needed for a place to be recognized as a village. The guidelines for these matters are quite vague and still reference wolves and goblins, which have not been spotted in the Shires for a long while. However, none of this is really important, as you soon find yourself with a list of charming tasks to complete.

Following the portrayal of the Shire in Tolkien's literature, and especially in the movies, this involves exploring Bywater's streets and crossings, assisting others, and gathering supplies. This is crucial because one of the main diversions in Tales Of The Shire is preparing meals for friends.

Heading to the kitchen in your newly inherited hobbit hole, you'll discover a cutting board and pots. If you have all the required ingredients, preparing a recipe can be done with a few taps; the challenge lies in attaining the perfect taste and consistency. The latter depends on how many times you chop each ingredient before putting it into the pot. Achieve the correct balance and your dish will be exceptionally tasty.

The food serves as a means of creating connections. Going to your writing desk, which is located near your hobbit hole's dining table, you write invitations for the townspeople to come and share a meal with you. You quickly discover their preferences and adjust the meals you prepare—ensuring they are as delicious and satisfying as possible—which enhances your friendships.
