As the African Democratic Congress (ADC) keeps gaining members from the People's Democratic Party (PDP) and the Social Democratic Party, former Vice President Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has called on his supporters to stay strong, as his new political party is expected to make a significant impact in the 2026 Governorship election in the state.
Speaking to supporters in Ado-Ekiti at the launch of the ADC, Atiku, who was represented by Prof. Bayo Fakunle, former Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy at Obafemi Awolowo University, vowed to free Nigerians from the hardships they are currently facing due to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Atiku stated that whoever emerges as the ADC gubernatorial candidate will win the 2026 election.
Encouraging Governor Biodun Oyebanji to draft a transition document before the election, Atiku expressed gratitude to the residents of the state for their backing of him as a presidential candidate in the prior elections.
Two ex-deputy governors, Professor Olusola Kolapo and Dr Sikiru Tae-Lawal, were present at the gathering.
Several ex-members of the Labour Party (LP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) also became part of the ADC in Ekiti.
The former Deputy Governor, Professor Kolapo Olusola, who headed the PDP group during the launch, stated that the ADC was established to remove individuals undermining the nation through poor governance, adding that the quality of people in the party is capable of bringing the country back to prosperity.
Our leaders believe that those responsible for harming the country through poor governance should be removed from power. Our leaders understand the steps needed to improve the Nigerian economy, and with God's help, these good intentions will come to fruition. Our leaders have adopted the fundamental values of integrity, openness, and responsibility; they know how to enhance the lives of Nigerians.
That's why we wish to collaborate with them. I call on all of us to unite and bring about genuine change for a better nation. I want to assure you that with the quality of individuals in this coalition, there is hope for a brighter Nigeria. ADC is here to stay.
We are introducing the ADC as a coalition platform formed by various parties aiming to rescue Nigeria from poor governance, carelessness, and absence of responsibility. ADC is more than just a political party; it serves as a hub for individuals committed to saving Nigeria. We reject intimidation and oppose a single-party system.
The ADC Chairman in Ekiti State, Mr. Omolayo Ilesanmi stated that the ADC in Ekiti State is dedicated to collaborating closely with the party's national leadership, "particularly as we prepare for the 2026 gubernatorial election and the 2027 general elections."
We are convinced that by working together, maintaining discipline, and showing commitment, we can create a government that genuinely represents the people, supports growth, and fosters effective leadership. The African Democratic Congress is a party that accepts those who align with our fundamental principles of advancement, progress, discipline, ethics, and truthfulness.
Our goal is to substitute politics fueled by corruption and lies with openness and responsibility. ADC represents a fresh start for Nigeria, a campaign dedicated to practical approaches, authentic leadership, and a future where all citizens can succeed.
Ilesanmi stated that individuals are seeking effective leadership, which they have not yet experienced, adding that this is the reason they are prepared to support the ADC in the Ekiti election.
The individual who is selected as our nominee for the 2026 gubernatorial race will assume the position of Ekiti State governor.
