New Insights into the Tragic Helicopter Crash
A prominent figure from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has shared new information regarding the tragic helicopter crash that occurred in Ghana. The incident, which took place near Obuasi on August 6, 2025, claimed the lives of eight individuals, including high-ranking officials and military personnel.
According to the Deputy CEO of the Students Loan Trust Fund, Kojo Danquah, Dr. Samuel Sarpong was part of the flight that ultimately crashed. He revealed that Dr. Sarpong joined the journey because Johnson Asiedu, the National Chairman of the NDC, had to step down due to an unforeseen circumstance. This detail was disclosed by Asiedu himself during a conversation with Danquah and others in Koforidua.
Asiedu had initially been scheduled to attend the official launch of the Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme (rCOMSDEP) in Obuasi. However, he delegated his responsibilities to his Vice Chairman, Dr. Samuel Abogaye Agyeman, due to an unexpected event. Despite this change, fate did not favor those on board the Z-9 helicopter, which crashed in the Sikaman Forest in the Adansi South District of the Ashanti Region.
The crash resulted in the loss of eight lives, including several notable figures. Among the deceased were the Minister of Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, and the Minister for Environment, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed. Other government officials who perished included the Deputy National Security Coordinator, Limuna Muniru, and the former parliamentary candidate for Obuasi East, Samuel Aboagye.
Additionally, three officers from the Ghana Armed Forces—Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah—were also among the victims. The tragedy sent shockwaves through the nation, prompting an outpouring of grief and condolences from various sectors.
Reactions on Social Media
Social media platforms became a space for people to express their sorrow and share tributes for the victims. Comments on videos related to the incident reflected deep emotional responses and calls for accountability. One user, Mohixbhoy, questioned the adequacy of the investigation, suggesting that the military base should be contacted to review the last communication between the pilot and the air base.
Another comment by Samtonykspar highlighted the fragility of human life, stating, "Growing up, I thought the only fragile things in life were glass and ceramics. But today, I’m convinced that human beings are way more fragile. Let’s just handle each other with care because we are fragile too."
Prajett added a note about the potential trauma involved, mentioning, "The trauma could even be in minutes if there was a notified problem before the main incident."
Expressions of Grief
Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia expressed his condolences over the loss of the eight individuals in the crash. He reached out to President John Mahama to convey his deepest sympathies to the families affected by the tragedy. His statement underscored the collective mourning experienced across the country.
As the investigation into the cause of the crash continues, the incident serves as a somber reminder of the unpredictability of life and the importance of safety measures in all forms of travel. The loss of such prominent figures has left a significant void in both the political and military spheres, prompting calls for further scrutiny and improved protocols to prevent future tragedies.
