A meeting held at the gathering
The 2025 version of the World Public Relations Day (WPRD) Festival ended on a positive note with an impactful discussion that gathered experienced communication experts and emerging talents to examine the essential role of personal branding and leadership in public relations.
Hosted in Accra on July 18, 2025, the event served as the highlight of the week-long festival arranged by the Global Media Alliance (GMA). This year signified the festival's fifth anniversary, which was observed with the theme "Dominant Coalition and Personal Branding."
Focused on the theme "Dominant Coalition and Personal Branding," the Fireside Chat offered an engaging conversation with two leading figures in Ghana's corporate communication field: Cynthia Lumor, Deputy Managing Director of Tullow Ghana, and Gayheart Mensah, Deputy CEO (Corporate Services) at the Food and Drugs Authority. Hosted by Cynthia Ofori-Dwumfuo, Group Head of Marketing and Corporate Affairs at Hollard Ghana, the discussion provided valuable insights, experiences, and practical knowledge.
Advancing Up the Leadership Ladder via Purpose and Personal Branding
In her initial comments, Madam Lumor encouraged PR professionals to accept ambiguity, take courageous actions in their professional journeys, and avoid remaining in situations that hinder development. "Fear of the unfamiliar holds us back. Don't hesitate to take a step forward, even if it means a reduced income," she suggested, emphasizing the significance of matching one's career with long-term worth and aspirations.
Based on her experiences, Madam Lumor emphasized that being prepared for leadership extends beyond just having a job title and is built on a thorough understanding of one's field and responsibilities. "No matter what your role is, ask yourself, 'What value do I add?' To find the answer, you need to grasp your industry in its entirety," she mentioned.
She highlighted visibility, readiness, and self-advocacy as key qualities. "Take part in initiatives, get well-prepared for discussions, and don't hesitate to express your opinions," she mentioned. "Stay noticeable and reliable. Don't avoid tough talks, and when you're pointed out, don't react negatively."
Madam Lumor attributed her career success to a strong drive to learn and a dedication to surpassing expectations. "You need that desire to learn. Be prepared to gain knowledge from those who have gone before you and take advantage of the opportunities that come your way."
Her approach to leadership in public relations is based on four key principles: Empathy, Integrity, Reliability, and Courage, which she considers essential for establishing trust and impact within the field.
Create Your Brand Using Principles and Self-Control
Reiterating these views, Mr. Mensah guided the audience through his transition from journalism to public relations and how he redefined his professional path by deliberately cultivating his personal brand.
Success is based on principles and values. Treat yourself with seriousness," he stated. "Ambition is positive, but ambition lacking in character won't take you very far. This is focused on personal growth and ongoing development, even beyond your main profession.
Mr. Mensah highlighted the significance of being purposeful in leadership growth. He shared how he made a conscious choice to conquer his inherent shyness in order to increase his professional impact. “Your brand is already present. What you are recognized for is your brand. The key question is: Are you nurturing and expanding that brand? This demands dedication and compromise.”
To younger professionals in the crowd, Mr. Mensah issued a call to action: Establish purposeful objectives. "Ensure that you set targets for yourself. It's crucial to have goals that are long-lasting, quantifiable, achievable, and practical," he recommended.
He also emphasized the significance of developing professional connections, maintaining ethical practices, and not overlooking the strength of regularity. "Individuals should be able to rely on you. Your dependability turns into your signature," he mentioned.
Honoring Five Years of Advocacy and the Expansion of Public Relations
The Fireside Chat marked the peak of the 2025 World PR Day Festival, which featured various events such as a MasterLAB exploring the convergence of PR, AI, and data analysis, along with a specially selected Festival Jamz playlist developed in collaboration with Boomplay and YFM, highlighting the blend of communication, culture, and innovation.
Emma Wenani, Chief Director of the Global Media Alliance, referred to the fifth edition as a celebration and a rallying cry. "This milestone signifies more than just advancement; it reflects the essence of fostering concepts and establishing long-lasting collaborations to elevate the Public Relations field, both in Ghana and around the world."
She conveyed sincere gratitude to the GMA team and affiliated organizations for their commitment and foresight. "It has been five years of development, influence, and teamwork. The informal discussion served as a fitting conclusion, and we are already anticipating an even more significant event next year."
