Grant Lumba a State Funeral – Nitiwul

Dominic Nitiwul, INSET: Daddy Lumba

THE MEMBERA Member of Parliament (MP) for Bimbilla and former Defence Minister, Dominic Nitiwul, has urged the government to grant a state funeral to the late highlife artist, Charles Kwadwo Fosu, widely recognized as Daddy Lumba.

Speaking on behalf of his tribute during a session in Parliament on Tuesday, Mr. Nitiwul referred to the legendary musician as "Ghana's Michael Jackson," highlighting how his impact went beyond political divisions, age groups, and societal strata.

"He was visionary," Nitiwul started, thinking about the country's surprise at the untimely passing of the renowned performer. "Ghana ought to provide him with a proper funeral," he emphasized.

He described the significant influence of Daddy Lumba's music, highlighting the iconic campaign song "Nana Ye Winner," which became widely popular during the 2008 general election. Although initially created for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr. Nitiwul mentioned that the song was so widely embraced that supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) also adopted it.

It was so widely appreciated among political parties that you couldn't tell if it was an NPP track or an NDC one," he said, adding, "It turned into a national anthem for how to write a campaign song.

Mr. Nitiwul highlighted that Daddy Lumba's impact extended well beyond his own musical work. He stated that the late artist guided and supported the beginnings of more than 30 Ghanaian performers, such as Kofi Nti, K.K. Fosu, Nana Boroo, and the late Kofi B.

Because he has produced so many musicians, over 20, 30 musicians who have gone through his guidance... this is a great individual we should honor," he said, adding, "He has contributed significantly to Ghanaian music.

Demanding a national period of remembrance and tribute, the MP suggested that the late legend receive a state funeral at the Parliament's entrance, enabling Ghanaians from every background to show their condolences.

"I hope the government grants him a state funeral here at the Parliament grounds, so that the people of Ghana can come and grieve for him. And I'm certain, the streets of Accra will be packed," he stated.

Mr. Nitiwul described the widespread sorrow felt throughout the nation and internationally, noting that "people are crying from Ghana to Germany, and from Bolgatanga to Accra."

He observed that numerous Ghanaians, even those who had never met Lumba in person, were profoundly impacted by his passing solely due to the joy he infused into their lives via his music.

"Some individuals who never shed tears for their own family members began crying upon hearing about Daddy Lumba's passing. It wasn't because they knew him personally, but because he filled the hearts of many with happiness," he stated.

Mentioning the musician's spiritual beliefs during his last years, the MP remembered interviews where Lumba always gave credit to God above all else, particularly following surgery and facing health issues.

He spoke in a poetic manner, saying, "Perhaps the ancestors of the land, the spirit of Ghana, the essence of Ashanti territory, were indicating to him that his time had come."

Several other lawmakers also praised the music icon, highlighting that his legacy will last for eternity.
