AWKA– The Dominican Sisters College in Abatete has cause for celebration on Sunday, as former Governor of Anambra State and Labour Party's 2023 presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, lays the cornerstone for a N100 million Boys’ hostel at the institution.
This is the second dormitory for boys that Obi is constructing for the college, and the third structure he has played a key role in building within the institution.
Obi, who later cut a cake to commemorate the graduation of the college's students and subsequently celebrated Sunday Mass in the church located within the College, allocated N25 million as the initial installment and pledged that the building would be completed progressively and certainly in the near future.
He expressed gratitude to the nuns for their accomplishments and promised to help them construct a school of their aspirations.
He mentioned that he is effectively part of the Dominican Sisters' community, having attended their church at least 10 times since he was the governor of Anambra State.
Obi encouraged the graduating students to value learning, as it is the reason for his current success.
He suggested that the responsibility of constructing the hostel might not rest entirely on him, and that a particular individual, whose mother's hometown is in the town, is offering assistance. The man's name will be disclosed at some point.
Obi stated that all his actions are aimed at benefiting the community, as a healthy society ensures advantages for everyone, while a troubled one impacts all individuals.
In an interview, the college's first principal, Rev. Sister Pia Mary Folashade Adesanya, commended Obi for serving as a source of support and motivation to the institution. She highlighted various construction initiatives that Obi had secured for the school, starting with a building funded by a bank, which replaced a house belonging to Obi during his 50th birthday celebration.
Obi himself remembered how the bank, where he served as director prior to becoming governor, had intended to construct a house for him in his village to celebrate his birthday, but he declined the offer, choosing instead that the bank build homes in three schools, including the Dominican Sisters College, Abatete.
Revd. Sister Adesanya also mentioned Obi's support in covering the school's wages during difficult times and his encouragement to transform the institution into a residential school, which has proven successful.
In addition to these, she continued, Obi provided the school with two buses, scholarships, and computers.
Adesanya, who is currently the Superior General of the Holy Family Sisters of the Needy, a position appointed by the Vatican, stated: "Seeing Obi today left me speechless in trying to express my emotions because the ground I am standing on can be called Peter Obi's soil, as he witnessed this school from its beginning to its end. It was originally a day school. When circumstances were tough and it was just a day school, it was Obi who proposed that we transform it into a boarding school. At a time when we couldn't afford to pay salaries, he helped us cover them for three months. The moment Obi entered the school, we saw a significant transformation," she concluded.
