They are frequently viewed like store security and receive dismissive glances — but Costco's receipt inspectors might be accomplishing more than simply delaying you as you leave.
It appears that the employees that many customers dislike are actually helping people save money.
Costco members are exchanging unexpected tales about how receipt reviewers have identified mistakes and helped them save money — in some cases, over $40 during one trip.
A popular Reddit post highlighted an employee who observed a customer being billed for a three-pack of houseplants at $16.99 each, despite taking only two.
At the exit, when my receipt was examined, the employee paused and said, 'You only purchased two plants but you paid for a 3-pack,' the customer wrote.
He summoned someone, got the additional charge refunded, and I ended up with the third plant. THIS is the reason they inspect receipts.
Other Costco members quickly added their own stories: "They've caught accidental double scans before — saved me $45 the last time," a customer shared.
Another person wrote: "I forgot an item and was about to leave without paying — they sent me back and let me keep it at no cost," another wrote.

Even if errors are overlooked, customers mentioned that the service team promptly addresses them.
Some pointed out that these mistakes can be hard to catch at the time—particularly during large collections when the final amount already seems substantial.
Although some continue to complain that receipt checks are intrusive or unnecessary, many Costco customers are beginning to view them in a new light: no longer just as security measures to prevent theft, but as a last resort to catch errors at the register.
Staff members claim that is the intention.
Receipt checks help deter shrink, the industry term for lost inventory — including theft, incorrect scans, or mistakes made by employees. By minimizing this loss, Costco maintains its well-known affordable pricing.
Legal professionals also state that the practice is entirely legitimate — the membership conditions involve agreement to exit inspections.
Not everyone enjoys it.
Customers have been observed to discuss this approach on the internet, with certain individuals suggesting that Costco would be better off hiring additional checkout employees rather than focusing on exit monitoring.
