Ancient Warning Emerges on Hawaiian Shore Before Megaquake

Unusual markings etched onto Hawaii's shoreline have surfaced again after ten years, possibly conveying a historical message from a thousand years ago.

A set of 26 rock carvings, created between the years 1000 and 1400 AD, appeared following thethe water level dropped beside the coastaround July 23 at Pōkaʻī Bay in Waianae

The carvings, mostly depicting human-like stick figures, could have served as a visual documentation of spiritual or historical occurrences, although American archaeologists noted their precisemeaning remains unclearbecause of insufficient written information.

Native Hawaiians, however, feel the symbols represent an ancestral warning regarding environmental shifts, including impending calamities caused byclimate change.

Native Hawaiian cultural expert Glen Kila stated, "It's conveying to the community that the ocean is increasing."

On Tuesday, a powerful earthquake measuring 8.8 on the Richter scale hit Russia's coastline, triggering additional tsunami warnings and causing the region's most significant volcano to erupt several hours later.

The seismic event ranked as the sixth strongest in history, and was the most significant in Russia's Kamchatka area since 1952.

A significant earthquake triggered tsunami waves along the northern California and Washington coasts on Wednesday morning, with a 3.6-foot wave being the largest observed on the US West Coast.

This is the first time the complete collection of 26 petroglyphs—carvings on rock surfaces—has been visible on the island of Oahu since 2016.

Regular ocean swells during certain seasons gradually remove the sand that covers the panel. Nevertheless, these seasonal changes usually expose only portions of the ancient engravings from May through November.

The whole set of structures along Pōkaʻī Bay measures approximately 115 feet and has endured severe summer storms and hurricanes, with the shifting ocean waters finally exposing them for the first time in ten years.

As per Kila, the discovered rock carvings could have been made by an ancient Polynesian community in Waianae more than 1,000 years ago.

Laura Gilda, an archaeologist affiliated with the US Army Garrison Hawaii, provided a more cautious estimate of around 600 years.

People visiting the beach could easily see the large symbols during low tide, when softer waves swept across the green algae covering the sandstone rock.

Archaeologists observed that 18 out of the 26 petroglyphs seem to be anthropomorphic stick figures, basic depictions of human-like shapes using lines to show bodies, arms, legs, and heads.

Eight are thought to depict male genitalia, yet it remains uncertain whether the others represent males or females.

Kila told the Associated Pressthat the panel seems to be depicting a spiritual or ritualistic narrative.

According to the teachings of native Hawaiians, the biggest petroglyph figure, featuring one hand with fingers up and the other pointing down, represents the sun's ascent and descent.

"My take, just by looking at it, was a representation of Maui, the demigod, Maui," Kila had previously explained during a2017 interview.

Native Hawaiians have portrayed Maui as a mythical character in their legends, recognized for his enormous stature and power.

As per local folklore, he is said to have lifted the Hawaiian islands from the ocean using his fishhook in one version of the tale, while in another, he captured the sun.

Kila mentioned that the fingers on the raised hand of the biggest petroglyph seem to face east, similar to the direction of the sunrise.

"It's a spiritual emblem. Similar to the ones we have in Christianity, such as the cross or other representations," the cultural expert added.

Although there seems to be no clear link between the recent large earthquakes and the re-emergence of the petroglyphs, native Hawaiians think their return might indicate that more natural disasters are on the way.

The Big Island and Oahu in Hawaii were both under a tsunami alert on Wednesday morning, but evacuation instructions were issued promptly.lifted.

The Hawaii Emergency Management Agency recommended that residents shouldStay at least 100 feet away from coastal waterways or boat harbors connected to the sea because of wave action and potential flooding..

"Where feasible, eliminate or position ships in deeper waters," the organization stated.
