Tragic Loss of a Rising Surfing Star
A young and promising surfer, Kolby Aipa, passed away at just 20 years old after a tragic accident that occurred on California’s famous Pacific Coast Highway. The incident happened when Aipa was being towed by a car on his e-bike, leading to severe injuries that ultimately took his life.
The accident occurred on Saturday in Huntington Beach, where Aipa lost control of his bike while being towed by a friend driving a Toyota Tacoma around 10 p.m. Authorities confirmed that the driver was not under the influence of any substances at the time of the crash. Despite the efforts of emergency responders who transported him to UCI Medical Center, Aipa succumbed to his injuries three days later.
An ongoing investigation is currently underway to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the accident. However, the community has already begun to mourn the loss of a young man whose impact extended far beyond the surfing world.
A Life of Kindness and Passion
Kolby Aipa was remembered by friends, family, and the broader community as a kind, caring individual and a talented surfer. He followed in the footsteps of his grandfather, Ben Aipa, who is a member of both the Surfing Walk of Fame and the Surfers’ Hall of Fame. His family, who owns the surfboard and apparel company Aipa Surf, expressed their deep sorrow over the loss.
In a statement released by Aipa Surf, the family said they were “completely heartbroken.” They highlighted Kolby’s unique ability to touch the lives of those around him, describing his acts of kindness and care as a gift of Aloha to both friends and strangers.
Friends and fellow surfers shared heartfelt messages about Kolby’s impact on their lives. One friend wrote on Instagram: “Kolby lit up every room he walked in. He loved and cared about everyone, regardless of our differences. He never let me go through any challenge or struggle alone. He was the strongest person I’ve ever met.”
A Lasting Legacy
The Huntington Beach Board Riders Club also paid tribute to Aipa, calling him a “rare soul who left a lasting impression on everyone he met.” They described him as kind, respectful, and full of spirit, always willing to help others. The club emphasized his integrity and how he made his family proud.
The City of Huntington Beach expressed its deep sadness over the passing of Aipa, referring to him as a “talented and beloved young member of our surfing community.” The city highlighted his passion for the ocean and the sport of surfing, but more importantly, his kindness and compassion.
Mayor Pat Burns added: “Our hearts are with the Aipa family during this difficult time. Kolby’s spirit, talent, and Aloha will forever be remembered in Huntington Beach. We extend our deepest condolences and prayers to his loved ones.”
A Community in Mourning
In the wake of the tragedy, a GoFundMe campaign was launched to help cover the costs of Aipa’s funeral. As of Wednesday morning, the fundraiser had raised over $74,000. The message accompanying the campaign encouraged people to continue Kolby’s legacy of Aloha.
“To everyone that read this... pass his Aloha on. So, how Kolby treated you, treat others in that same way,” the fundraiser stated. “In this, you are continuing his legacy of Aloha.”
Kolby Aipa’s life may have been cut short, but his memory and the values he lived by will continue to inspire those who knew him. His story serves as a reminder of the importance of kindness, compassion, and the enduring power of love.
