Authorities Respond to Rising Concerns Over Violence Against Women in Odisha
In a recent development, the police in Jagatsinghpur district of Odisha have taken significant steps following an alleged gang rape incident involving a young girl. A senior police official confirmed that one individual has been detained while efforts are ongoing to locate another suspect involved in the crime.
The incident was reported on Monday night when the victim's father approached the local police and claimed that two unidentified individuals had raped his daughter. According to the Jagatsinghpur Superintendent of Police, Bhawani Sankar Udgata, the case is currently under investigation. During the inquiry, the identities of both suspects were revealed. One of them was arrested overnight, while the police continue their search for the other suspect.
This incident has sparked widespread concern across the state, particularly from political leaders who have highlighted the growing challenges related to safety for women. Naveen Patnaik, the former Chief Minister of Odisha and leader of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), expressed deep distress over the rising incidents of crimes against women. He described the situation as "disturbing" and emphasized the need for urgent action to address the issue.
Patnaik pointed out that the recent surge in sexual assaults reflects a troubling decline in law enforcement effectiveness. He noted that the streets in both urban and rural areas have become increasingly unsafe for women, regardless of the time of day. He also criticized the lack of accountability within the police force, suggesting that interference and political pressure have weakened its ability to protect citizens effectively.
Adding to these concerns, the US Government recently issued a Level 2 travel advisory for Odisha, highlighting the state among six Indian regions where American employees must seek special approval for travel beyond capital cities. While the state has seen a decrease in Maoist activity and minimal terrorism, this advisory likely reflects growing worries about the rising crime rates against women.
Another incident that brought attention to the crisis occurred in Jajpur, where a 15-year-old girl was allegedly raped by three individuals, including her two hockey coaches. The incident took place on July 3, when the victim was returning home after training at the Jajpur Hockey Training Centre. Two trainers and another individual reportedly forced the girl to leave her bicycle and accompany them to a lodge.
The victim's mother informed the sports officer of Jajpur, leading to a formal complaint being lodged with the police on July 20. The case was registered under relevant sections of the BNS and the POCSO Act. Although the victim's statement was recorded at the POCSO Court, none of the accused have been arrested yet.
Patnaik urged the BJP-led state government to take immediate action to restore safety and rebuild trust in the system. He emphasized the importance of decisive police action and political will to combat the growing problem of gender-based violence. He warned that allowing interference from local party leaders in police stations would only normalize such violence across the state.
The BJD chief reaffirmed the party's commitment to advocating for the protection of women in every forum. He stressed that without urgent and effective measures, the situation will continue to deteriorate. The recent spate of crimes has underscored the need for a comprehensive approach to ensure the safety and security of all women in Odisha.
