The Ongoing Struggles of Indian Seamers
Indian cricket has long been known for its strong pace bowling attack, but recent events have highlighted a growing concern among fans and experts alike. Former cricketer-turned-commentator Sanjay Manjrekar has raised alarms about the persistent issue of Indian seam bowlers struggling to stay fit for extended periods. This problem, he argues, needs urgent attention and proper management.
A Series in Peril
India is currently trailing 1-2 against England in a five-match series, with the fourth Test set to take place in Manchester. The team is facing significant challenges, as several key players have been sidelined due to injuries. Akash Deep, who played a crucial role in India’s historic Test win at Edgbaston, is currently dealing with a groin injury. Meanwhile, Arshdeep Singh, who has yet to earn his maiden Test cap, sustained a hand injury during a training session. To address the depleted pace bowling attack, Anshul Kamboj was sent to Manchester.
Before his latest setback, Akash had been away from the field due to a prolonged injury lay-off. During India's tour of Australia, he featured in two Tests but suffered a back injury that kept him out for three months. He returned to action with the Lucknow Super Giants in the 18th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
A Concerning Trend
Manjrekar pointed out that while there are young, talented seam bowlers available, the issue lies in their ability to maintain fitness. He mentioned Arshdeep Singh and Anshul Kamboj as promising options, along with Harshit Rana, who impressed in the one Test he played in Australia. However, the current situation highlights a recurring problem.
Akash Deep's injury crisis is a glaring example of the broader issue affecting Indian seamers. In addition to Akash, Jasprit Bumrah, the world's best fast bowler, is restricted from playing all five Tests due to workload management. His participation is limited to three fixtures following a stress reaction in his back during the fifth Test against Australia in January.
Young Talent and Persistent Setbacks
Mayank Yadav, another emerging talent, has also faced multiple setbacks. His time in the last edition of the IPL was cut short due to a side strain. During his recovery, he sustained another injury, further delaying his return. Despite regaining fitness and making a comeback in T20Is against Bangladesh, Mayank faced another setback.
The 22-year-old, who fetched Rs 11 crore in the IPL auction, recovered at the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. However, after just two appearances, he was forced to sit out due to a back injury.
A Call for Action
Manjrekar emphasized that the problem lies in the lack of proper fitness management for Indian seam bowlers. He noted that even Akash, who hasn't bowled extensively through the season, is now facing issues due to inadequate workload management.
"I think it has become a serious issue where you don't have Indian seam bowlers staying fit long enough, and that has to be addressed by Indian cricket. We see young, exciting bowling talent in the IPL, and after three matches, they are not seen in the next season. Somebody needs to get to the bottom of it," he said.
Current Squad for the Fourth Test
India's squad for the fourth Test includes: Shubman Gill (C), Rishabh Pant (VC & WK), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel (WK), Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd. Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Kuldeep Yadav, Anshul Kamboj.
