‘Dear Grandpa,’ she wrote.
Two days prior to the most significant competition of my career, you departed.
'It still doesn't seem genuine. I kept expecting that when I called Nannie, I would hear your voice once more – one of your jokes, or those small remarks you used to make that somehow conveyed everything without saying much.
You were among my most significant supporters. You had faith in me even before I could envision the path ahead. You were consistently present—observing, motivating, and guiding. You imparted a great deal of knowledge to me, not only regarding football, but also about life. You taught me the importance of remaining humble, striving diligently, showing perseverance, and doing things the correct way.
I miss our conversations. I miss you saying 'Only us athletes understand' — always with a small smile as if you were part of something unique. And you were. You got it. You knew what this meant to me. You understood what it took.
It hurts me deeply that you weren't able to witness me stepping out for our country at my first big tournament... a dream you had for me, a topic we discussed many times. I longed to see your face or hear your voice after the match, calling back home. I wanted to share that moment with you.
But I know, deep inside, you were always present. I felt your presence beside me. In the tunnel. On the field. During the challenging times. I heard your voice in my mind when I needed courage.
I hope I brought you joy, Grandpa. I carried you with me every moment.
And I will always do it. I did it. WE DID IT.
Talking about the pitch in Basel following England's intense defense of the European Championship, Hampton stated: 'This team is simply amazing, incredible.'
We have demonstrated during this tournament that we are capable of making a comeback when we find ourselves a goal behind.
We possess that determination, we have English heritage in our veins, we never give up, and we keep moving forward, which we did again today.
Hampton took on the challenge of substituting the renowned goalkeeper Mary Earps in the England team, which was a minor task in comparison toovercoming the severe eye condition she had during her childhood.
Sarina Wiegman commented on her top goalkeeper: "Every player has their own story and path, and hers has been remarkable."
Beginning the tournament and losing the first match, there was a lot at stake in each game, and we ended up in five finals. She needed to rise to the occasion, and I believe she has done exceptionally well. It's somewhat like a fairytale to save those two penalties in the final.
