I Left the UK for Spain – Drinks Are Cheap and Concerts Are Free Every Night

A woman has left the UK to reside inSpainand mentions that it feels like a "perpetual vacation" with bottles of wine priced at 3.50 Euros and free performances each evening.

Jade Gartshore, 25, enjoyed a thriving profession but claims it didn't provide her with sufficient satisfaction, and she faced challenging periods.

Having journeyed with her husband Edward Partis, 25, an electrical engineer, she developed a fondness for the Spanish city of Murcia.

She left her job to move out last November and said they can't seem to find themselves 'moving back to the UK'.

Jade said, "I used to sit in the office and gaze outside, thinking, this can't be life, you know, waking up in the dark and returning home in the dark every day."

I was consistently performing well in my work, but it simply wasn't fulfilling enough.

It's as if I'm on a never-ending vacation, I wake up in a much better mood and frequently experience those 'pinch me' moments where I still can't believe I call this place home.

We hold a free concert each night. The performance varies in every town.

So you'll experience jazz, disco, techno, and these events will take place along the waterfront, all organized by the local authority.

That's where part of your money is directed, which can be a satisfying sensation.

You can purchase a glass of wine for 3.50 Euros, which seems outrageous, but your regular shopping expenses may be quite similar to those in the UK.

Jade and Edward, residents of Leicester, embarked on a six-month trip in 2023, spending five weeks in Murcia - the place where Jade's parents have settled.

The couple continued their journey through Asia - but couldn't stop thinking about Spain.

Jade stated, "For the entire six months, we were focused on figuring out how to return to Spain, and we became completely enamored with it."

The discussion continuously returned to Murcia, as we both really liked it and felt the same way, which was quite fortunate.

To be honest, growing up in the UK, I never really felt it was my home.

At the age of 16, I traveled to California alone for a vacation to visit friends, and by the time I was 19, we attempted to reside in Australia, but it simply didn't work out for us.

So I just have this feeling that throughout my life, I've always known that the UK isn't right for me.

It may seem frightening, but taking the leap in your twenties is indeed an ideal time.

Jade was on track for a promotion to manager in her role as an estate agent but chose to 'take the leap' and start a fresh life elsewhere.

She stated, "I was absolutely terrified, I had a fantastic job, and my friendly manager wanted me to take on a managerial role. I simply walked away from everything because it didn't feel correct."

The individuals in this area, particularly in Murcia, are truly very welcoming.

I've always dreamed of living by the coast, but Murcia also offers mountains where you can go hiking.

It's very much about outdoor living, which is exactly my kind of thing.

Although there are numerous free events organized by the council, Jade aimed to dispel the belief that living overseas is significantly more affordable than in the UK.

She stated, "I believe people perceive it as being quite inexpensive here, particularly when you visit on vacation, but the main difference lies in the alcohol."

Jade, who is currently seeking employment, described how housing costs and expenses are also quite comparable, stating, "it varies depending on your location."

"Some locations nearby are pricier than renting in the UK, and you receive less value for your money, but in certain areas, you get better value depending on where you are," she stated.

Murcia is situated in the southeastern region of the country and ranks as the seventh biggest city in Spain. It is referred to as 'the fruit basket of Spain' because of its production of fruits, vegetables, and flowers.

Jade remarked, "The fruits and vegetables are significantly larger and possess a much richer taste."

Our eating habits haven't undergone significant changes because I believe it's challenging to make quick adjustments. Therefore, we still stick to our usual meals that we used to have in the UK, but you just feel more energized.

She has the option to visit nearby farmers and take tours to view the products at a cost as low as 12 Euros.

Jade's parents relocated to the city two years back for their retirement, and they are currently residing with them until their upcoming move to a new apartment located only 15 minutes away from the beach.

The couple have observed a particular cultural distinction in Spain when contrasted with the UK.

Jade remarked, "One observation I've made is that individuals don't merely seek activities on weekends; they are willing to arrange plans daily, even if it's just a simple stroll."

Initially, she was 'quite concerned' about the loneliness of living overseas, but she has discovered that she now has 'more friends here than in the UK.'

Jade is "100 per cent" more outgoing these days, she mentioned: "I believe I've attended two events every day. A few days ago, we went to the beach with friends and then traveled to another location to see the sunset."

And with my other friend, we attended a concert, so it's about making use of free opportunities and not relying on the weather.

The pair have accomplished this by immersing themselves in the culture and are also attempting to study Spanish, with the assistance of her new acquaintances.

Jade stated, "I attend a one-hour session in the village every week, and afterward, I simply gather feedback from my social media and apply it."

Jade showcases her life in Murcia through social media and has built a group of individuals who also dream of moving overseas someday.

Her audience consists of approximately 60 percent Spanish speakers, which enabled her to 'understand the region and its culture much faster'.

I strive to use my account to demonstrate that if I am capable of it, so are they.

Even if it's only for travel, take the chance, pursue what you desire.

Data collected by CompareMyMove indicates a 32.6 percent rise in individualsdeparting the UK in the initial part of 2025than there were in the first half of 2024.

It also discovered that Spain is the top destination for Britons relocating this year.

Jade intends to reside in Murcia indefinitely and mentioned she "can't envision returning to the UK again."
