Key themes such as history, cultural heritage restoration, and environmental stewardship are central to the work of emerging architects in the UK who have been nominated for this year's Stephen Lawrence Prize.
Now in its 27th year, the prize was created as a tribute to Stephen Lawrence, a young man and future architect who lost his life in a racially driven murder in 1993.
The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), the organization that presents the award, states its goal is to solely promote emerging talent and motivate others during the initial phases of their professional journeys.
Matthew Goldschmied, who serves as Jury Chair and Managing Trustee at the Marco Goldschmied Foundation, stated: "the shortlist this year showcases the diverse brilliance of architectural achievement. These structures convey numerous stories; tales of joy, honesty, and kindness towards people, locations, and the environment."
Six of the best
Knepp Wilding Kitchen and Store by Kaner Olette Architects
Headed by Toko Andrews, the Knepp Wilding Kitchen and shop is the UK's initial rewilding initiative. The Surrey location in southern England was once a set of deteriorating and poorly utilized farm structures.
It now consists of various functional areas including a café and restaurant, as well as a farm store highlighting eco-friendly, locally sourced goods, along with specific amenities for guests.
On its official website, Knepp presents itself as a 3,500-acre initiative focused on rewilding, which has 'transformed our understanding of nature and how we can restore the Earth'.
Hallelujah Initiative by Peregrine Bryant Associates
Helena Tunbridge serves as the project architect overseeing the Hallelujah conservation initiative at the Grade I-listed building that was once the residence of George Frideric Handel and subsequently home to Jimi Hendrix. The site has been transformed into a museum featuring exhibition areas that honor the lives of the two musicians and their period in London.
The structure has been thoughtfully renovated to ensure its enduring sustainability, honoring its connection to the famous German-British Baroque composer and its ties to the American pioneering guitarist who resided in an apartment on the top floor of number 23 during the late 1960s.
Pine Heath by Studio Hagen Hall
The comprehensive home renovation headed by Louis Hagen Hall is a thoughtful, energy-conscious reimagining of a modernist townhouse. A primary goal of the project was to preserve as much of the original structure and materials as possible, while enhancing essential components that were responsible for the building's inadequate thermal performance, energy efficiency, and carbon footprint.
St. Mary's Walthamstow by Matthew Lloyd Architects
Alex Spicer has lived up to his name by converting this old Grade II* listed church in east London into a bright, inspiring area that benefits the broader community.
A simple new one-level addition has taken the place of the old car park and now features a parish office and an exhibition area, providing views of light and evidence of human presence both inside and outside.
University of Staffordshire's Woodlands Nursery by Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios
Jack Baker's redevelopment of a parking area is motivated by the desire to establish a beneficial setting for young children. This project highlights social and environmental sustainability, featuring a timber-covered, carbon-neutral structure for the new University of Staffordshire Woodlands Nursery and Forest School. It is located on the university campus near a nature reserve in Stoke-on-Trent.
The Exeter College Library, Oxford by Nex
Joe Dent has spearheaded a significant overhaul of a declining library at Exeter College, resulting in a modern, strong, and well-lit space for students.
In general, this smart renovation has transformed a worn-out listed building with constraints into a modern, strong, and well-lit space for learning, greatly appreciated by those who use it.
The victor will be revealed during the RIBA Stirling Prize event on Thursday, October 16, 2025, held at The Roundhouse in London.
