Nigeria's North West population
In November 2024, Nasir Isa Kwarra, the head of the National Population Commission (NPC), stated that Nigeria's much-anticipated national census will take place in 2025. This will be the first census held in the country since 2006, deviating from the United Nations' recommendation that countries conduct censuses every ten years.
Kwarra issued this statement during the 2024 Nairobi Summit on the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) anniversary in Abuja. He highlighted the significant effect of the delay on national development, especially regarding resource distribution and population planning. He stated:
This lack of precise population information creates difficulties in customizing reproductive health services and programs for particular demographic groups, which ultimately hinders efforts to decrease maternal deaths and enhance access to family planning.
Impact of population data in Nigeria
He also pointed out that the lack of precise population information has led to major difficulties in tackling reproductive health issues, lowering maternal death rates, and enhancing availability of family planning services.
The census was initially planned for 2023 but was delayed twice during the tenure of former President Muhammadu Buhari. However, following President Bola Tinubu's announcement regarding 2025, the government has remained quiet about the updated census plans.
Across the world, a census is typically carried out to count the population residing in a nation or specific area.

Population: China urges parents to have more children
zaia news.ngPreviously, it was reported that China launched its first national child allowance, providing families with ¥3,600 (£375; $500) each year per child under the age of three, in an effort to address declining birth rates.
Eligible parents could get as much as ¥10,800 (£1,125; $1,500) for each child over a period of three years, in response to worries that the nation's aging population is reducing the available workforce.
Authorities caution that the financial assistance might not be adequate, as a report indicates it costs approximately $75,700 on average to raise a child in China until they turn 17.
