Chelsea's £270.6m Profit from 16 Sales Under Boehly

ChelseaHave invested significant amounts in the transfer market since Todd Boehly's acquisition in 2022 – but they have also generated considerable revenue from selling players.

With Boehly and Clearlake Capital as owners, Chelsea have mastered the art of securing top value for their players, sparking complaints from other quarters.

We have calculated the 16 sales that resulted in a profit for the club since the summer of 2022, amounting to an astonishing £270.6 million.

Note: the number associated with each sale represents the profit Chelsea earned, not necessarily the total amount received.

Billy Gilmour – £10million

A well-mannered player at Stamford Bridge, Gilmour was still considered unnecessary by Boehly during his initial summer and was sent to Brighton for a neat £10 million.

He has since joined Napoli, securing the Serie A title in 2025, while Chelsea have tried multiple less effective midfielders before spending more than £200 million on Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo.

Mason Mount – £55million

Exceptional during Thomas Tuchel's tenure, Mount had fallen out of favor by the conclusion of the 2022-23 campaign and was subsequently sold for £55 million to Manchester United.

The athlete has not yet regained his previous performance level at Old Trafford, whereas Chelsea acquired Cole Palmer for approximately £10 million less.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek – £15million

"I had always thought about moving. As this season approached its end, it seemed like the perfect moment to take the next step. I was beginning to feel very comfortable in my body and my injuries had healed," Loftus-Cheek said to The Times about his choice to depart Chelsea for AC Milan in 2023.

Following the last two seasons, where I felt great but wasn't playing in the position I desired, I was feeling like a caged animal.

I simply desire the freedom to play right now, and I believe it's the appropriate moment to move forward. Although change is often challenging, it can sometimes be the most beneficial choice.

After hesitating a bit with loans and average loans, Loftus-Cheek pushed forward and had a strong first season at the San Siro.

And Chelsea made £15 million in pure profit. A deal that benefited both the player and the club.

Ethan Ampadu – £7million

Since Ampadu had spent the past four years of his Chelsea tenure on loan, it was high time he secured a new permanent club.

Leeds succeeded in securing his commitment, and the Welsh international has consistently outperformed others in the Championship since joining Elland Road.

He led the club to promotion last season and will be honored to guide the team back into the Premier League this year.

Callum Hudson-Odoi – £5million

It seems like ages since Hudson-Odoi was crowned as Chelsea's next big star.

He debuted for England prior to making his Premier League appearance, with the Blues reportedly turning down a staggering £70 million offer from Bayern Munich in 2020.

The forward's career has not gone as planned. He was never able to secure a consistent starting position at Chelsea and has not represented England since 2019.

However, he has had the opportunity to showcase his abilities – ultimately, in a stable setting – at Nottingham Forest.

Ian Maatsen – £37.5million

Maatsen might not have had a wealth of experience when Chelsea sold him in 2024.

However, he has already earned a Championship winners' medal and featured in a Champions League final, thanks to his loan spells at Burnley and Borussia Dortmund.

Aston Villa paid £37.5 million for the Dutch international, who had a consistent first season at Villa Park.

Conor Gallagher – £36million

One of the major transfer stories this summer was Gallagher's move to, and subsequent return from, Atletico Madrid, before the £36 million deal was ultimately finalized.

Overlooked by many, yet cherished by Diego Simeone and Atletico Madrid supporters, Gallagher is currently with the ideal team and the perfect coach to maximize his abilities.

Lewis Hall – £28million

Hall could have been born and brought up in Berkshire, enrolling in Chelsea's youth system at the age of eight, yet he grew up supporting Newcastle due to his father, who came from the North East.

Having managed to secure a few appearances for the Blues, Hall moved to Newcastle in 2023—initially on a loan basis, with intentions of a long-term transfer.

Although he had a limited influence in his first season, a permanent move was still finalized for a £28 million fee, and Hall made a significant impact the following year.

Omari Hutchinson – £20million

After assisting Ipswich in reaching the Premier League, Chelsea were pleased to sell Hutchinson to the Tractor Boys for an initial fee of £18 million, along with additional bonuses, which helped them comply with their financial fair play rules.

Although Ipswich was quickly relegated, Hutchinson made an impact with his play and contributed to England's success in winning the under-21 European Championship title in June 2025.

We speculate he may return to the Premier League this summer, as Brentford has already shown interest in the winger.

Angelo – £6.4million

Chelsea paid £13 million to acquire Angelo from Santos in the summer of 2023 and promptly loaned him out to Strasbourg for the entire season.

Only a year later, he permanently departed the club. The young player joined Al-Nassr in a transfer valued just under £20 million, allowing Chelsea to make a swift and simple gain. How do they manage it?

Diego Moreira – £1.7million

Similar to Angelo, Moreira came and went through the door very swiftly, signing in the summer of 2023 and then being loaned out, only to be sold last summer to Strasbourg.

The 20-year-old player did indeed feature in his Chelsea debut prior to being sent out on loan, but he was brought back from Lyon in January 2024.

Noni Madueke – £20million

Eyebrows were raised when Arsenal decided to pay £48.5 million for Madueke; he had displayed potential at Chelsea, but appears to be overvalued.

Maybe Mikel Arteta has noticed something in him. Chelsea were more than willing to put the money back into acquiring Jamie Gittens.

QUIZ: Can you list all the players who have played for both Arsenal and Chelsea in the Premier League?

Djorde Petrovic – £12.5million

The first option in the final months of Mauricio Pochettino's time in charge, Petrovic was sent to Strasbourg last season even though he didn't do much wrong.

Having around 37 goalkeepers in their squad, Chelsea was happy to sell him to Bournemouth for £25 million and doubled their investment on the Serbian international.

Bashir Humphreys – £10million

Humphreys' transfer to Burnley in 2025 generated £10 million in profit for a left-back whose market value was only £6 million, having made just two appearances for Chelsea and never expected to play again.

Genius.

Ishe Samuels-Smith – £6.5million

Chelsea supporters claim that Samuels-Smith's worth will increase threefold within the next 12 months following his transfer to Strasbourg.

Skeptics with a single eye will argue that the increased transfer to one of Chelsea's affiliated clubs was purely to boost the club's finances.
